Happy Hours in Rockville

Review of Gordon Biersch

MCR Rating:

A happy hour with this rating is still a damn good happy hour, so don’t think you should only look at “Excellent.” It might have been deficient in few areas of our rating model, but these may be things some people don’t care about. So in some cases, a “Good” is no different than an “Excellent.”

What is Gordon Biersch?

Gordon Biersch stands at the entrance to the Rockville Town Square. The bar area is up front, with the restaurant area neatly placed in the back. The design is open, yet the bar & restaurant areas are separated enough to maintain different sights and noise levels. The décor is inviting and sophisticated with warm colors and plenty of wood & brass fixtures. Bar area contains small and long-length bar tables and stools, some with bench seats along the restaurant divider. Outside Area:  Yes.  Interior bar opens up to an outside bar and seating area along the sidewalk. Entertainment:  No.

Our Review

Gordon Biersch in Rockville is a very happening spot for happy hour. Tables and seats were full by 6pm, but that did not stop the crowd from standing room only. Wait service was acceptable; welcoming but a bit hurried; quick to respond to an order, but when it gets busy, it’s harder to get attention. Although discounted, drinks are still relatively expensive. But if you are a fan of brewed-on-premises beer, the quality beer is well worth the $4 pints. Appetizers are unique and have a decent serving for $5. You may want to steer clear of the $5 mojitos; very sweet, but the actual amount of rum was suspect. The setup is very conducive to mingling and conversation, as evident the by the large crowd of chatty patrons. The crowd is a bit younger, averaging in the late 20s to mid 30s, most of which were sporting more professional attire (although you would not feel uncomfortable in more casual clothing). One word of caution: the happy hour annoyingly ends 30 minutes before most, so beware of 6:30 approaching and your bill running up.

The Run Down

This microbrew is a good choice if you're interested in high quality beer and the opportunity to mingle with a professional crowd. If you prefer a quiet and relaxed atmosphere, or are on a budget, you should consider other options.
