Happy Hours in Wheaton

Review of Royal Mile Pub

MCR Rating:

A decent happy hour means that the bar probably does a couple things very well, but also lacks a few qualities. These are the places where you’ll find love-hate debates among different people. Read the review and decide whether it’s a place you want to give a shot.

What is Royal Mile Pub?

Royal Mile Pub is a Scottish-themed pub in the center of the Wheaton commercial district. The simple one-room layout contains a U-shaped bar with stools, with tables and chairs off to one side. Aside from a few Scottish decorations on the walls, the no-frills décor sets the tone for this low-key local pub. Outside Area:  Yes.  Very limited outdoor capacity: about three tables with chairs on the sidewalk. Entertainment:  No.

Our Review

It is understandable why the Royal Mile Pub is a local favorite: a simple establishment that focuses on quality food, drink, and service. At first entrance you may question the happy hour you’re about to enjoy. No fancy furniture, no real décor to take in, the bar can be a bit cramped or awkward, and the atmosphere depends almost entirely on the people that are sitting there with you. But once you have a chance to order from the friendly and helpful bartender, you’ll know why people keep coming back. Although there are no food specials, the delicious meal you’ll receive with well worth full price. The fish n’ chips is a favorite, and even the burgers are memorable. Draft beers come in 20 oz mugs, and are mostly regional craft brews…so even though beer will run you over $4.50, keep in mind the quantity and the higher ABV. As far as happy hour deals are concerned, there was a bit of confusion. The bartender didn’t know of any specials (other than the free pasta on a table by the door), but in a later phone call to the manager to clarify this point, it was mentioned that they do have specials during the week ($1 off drafts, scotch tastings, etc). But the situations still didn’t seem too clear, and the deals aren’t advertised anywhere either in or out of the bar.

The Run Down

With excellent food and quality beer and scotch, the Royal Mile Pub is a good choice for those with a discerning palette. This simple establishment is not the best choice for those looking for a deal on simple appetizers and domestic beer.
